Over 100 young people meet in the first ‘Bizilabe eguna’ in Bilbao to present 20 scientific-technological projects
2024/06/13 STEAM-Hezkuntza (Elhuyar Zientzia)
Youths from Basurto, Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Zorroza have participated in the first ‘Day of Bizilabe’, explaining the innovative ideas worked during the course at the event held in the Ensanche building.
Over 100 young people from Bizilabe Bilbao presented 20 scientific and technological projects in the first edition of the “Day of Bizilabe”. In addition to the family members, in the event held at the end of the course in the Ensanche Building in Bilbao, Xabier Ochandiano, Councilman of the Area of Economic Development, Trade, Tourism and Employment of the City Council of Bilbao and Itxaso Erroteta, Councilman of the Youth and Sports Area of the Bilbao City Development, representing the Municipality.
Bizilabe is a project organized by Elhuyar that aims to offer young people scientific experiences with the involvement of the whole community. The after-school activity Bizilabe in Basurto, Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Zorroza has been developed throughout the 2023-2024 course, with a participation of 139 young people divided into 11 groups, 88 youth from 5 and 6 years of Primary, 38 from 1 and 2 years of ESO and 13 from 3 and 4 years of ESO.
These are the 20 projects that have been presented on the day carried out in the Portal del Edificio Ensanche as an act of end of the course:
5th and 6th Primary Projects:
- Glasses have been made to see in virtual reality. The primary goal of virtual reality glasses is to trick our heads into believing that we're seeing a 3D image.
- They have programmed the “Dance dance dance revolution” and “Satorra” games by preparing the programming. In addition, they have created a guide model.
- Crystallization: they have learned the crystals forming procedure and the materials needed for it and have made an over-saturated solution. They manufacture copper sulphate crystals, geoda eggs, glass gardens or monoamonic phosphate crystals (ADP).
- Extract DNA: they've extracted plant DNA and learned that it's a biomolecule shared by all living things.
- They've learned Pascal's principle by developing hydraulics projects. They have produced the movement of the built structure, giving rise to the movement of fluids. In this case, they have built doors, robotic hands and maze bridges.
- Paper aircraft engineering has become a challenge. The objective of this challenge is to design and build a paper aircraft to analyze the influence of the design and shape of the aircraft on the flight. In addition, to launch paper aircraft, a paper projector based on the engineering design process has been built.
- They've studied magnetism through experiments like ferrofluids, magnetic slimes and electromagnets.
- They've done a model of the solar system.
- The properties of light have been studied through different experiments.
1.- Projects of 4th ESO:
- Blind runner: They make a blind pole that warns of obstacles.
- Biodiesel: Biodiesel has been produced from used and unused oils and differences between these materials have been analyzed in order to determine the best biodiesel.
- Future Street: They make a road prototype that generates electrical energy from piezoelectric material.
- Dron: They've designed and built a drone using 3D printing techniques. They've programmed it with an arduino to interact with an analog joystick. As a result, they can control the altitude of the flight and the drone’s inclination and movements.
- Hydroetxea: In this project a hydroelectric model has been designed and built using 3D printing techniques, with a pelton turbine type.
- Antibiogram: the antibiogram technique has analyzed the natural antibiotics and antifungals present in the food and have been compared with commercial antibiotics. This work has been awarded at the Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka.
- Hovercraft: They build a hovercraft with different materials.
- Video game: Create a video game with Scratch to raise children's awareness of bad eating habits.
- Hydroponic culture: a hydroponic culture has been built and lettuce has been sown.
- Organic cosmetics: they have produced a shower gel, a shampoo and an organic body cream.
- Pill dealer: A device has been created to store the pills in order and distribute them.
BIZILABE, A GROWING NETWORK SINCE 2017
Since 2017, the goal of Bizilabe is to promote scientific and technological experiences among young people, and it works with community participation. That is why, in addition to carrying out projects, thanks to the “Peer Meeting” initiative with professional researchers, to the visits of researchers received in Bizilabe or to the “Escaparates of 11 February” initiative that took place on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, young people have known the daily work and the real references in the field of science and technology. In addition, visits to companies and technological centers have made it possible to know the scientific and technological reality of the environment.
Since Bizilabe opened its doors in Deusto in 2017, the project has been extended to three other points in Bilbao: In 2021 it became operational in Otxarkoaga, in 2022 in Zorroza and in 2023 in Basurto. From 2017 to the present, over 800 young people have participated in Bizilabe. In addition, the Bizilabe community has been growing and 25 companies, 43 schools and 234 shops have already joined.
In the course of 2024-2025, which will begin in October, the new Bizilabe space of Bilbao will open in the Fronton Esperanza.
From October 2024 to May 2025 the registration to participate in the Bizilabe program of Bilbao “Izan investigator and inventor” can be made through the following link: Inscriptions Bizilabe 2024-2025
