The UPV/EHU Research Group on Metal Catalysis and Organocatalisis has achieved a method to control the synthesis of some types of molecules and to create one of the enantiomers. The work has been carried out in collaboration with the Rovira i Virgili University, and has managed to selectively construct two of the enantiomeric molecules of a group of cyclobutanes.
As you have explained, this opens the way to new structures that have not yet been achieved and that could be used as drugs, among others. For this purpose, they have used small amounts of a catalyst derived from cobre.Angewandte Chemie has published this finding and the analysis of the scope of the methodology.
On the other hand, they have reported that the method corresponds to one of the theories about the origin of life. According to this theory, molecules caused life through spontaneous symmetry desimetrization. In fact, our entire organism and all living systems are based on asymmetrical biomolecules that only have one of the two enantiomers.
