The University of Illinois has developed a solar drive for an eye implant prototype. This drive is sufficient with little light reaching the retina to release implant neurotransmitters and thus give visibility to the eye.

The background consists of a silicon solar cell and a piezoelectric material. Once light reaches the solar cell, it produces a potential difference that modifies the shape of the piezoelectric material. This change releases neurotransmitters.
