The sun in three dimensions

2007/04/26 Rementeria Argote, Nagore - Elhuyar Zientziaren Komunikazioa

For the first time they have received three-dimensional images of the Sun. The images have been made jointly through NASA's STEREO observatory. Experts say they will help better understand the physics of the Sun and, incidentally, predict solar storms.

Solar storms are ion flows that occasionally leave the Sun and can damage satellites, radio communication, and the power grid when they reach Earth. Therefore, it is important that the prediction of solar storms is as accurate as possible. These three-dimensional images will help you to do this, you will know exactly where the Sun's ionic eruptions occur, and so the weather forecasts of the space will be able to predict which direction they will follow.
