Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka brings together 800 youth in the Arenal Bilbaíno to showcase 200 STEAM projects conducted during the course

The 2024 Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka is underway. Opens at 11:00 in the morning with official opening. Along with the agents of the Basque science and technology network supporting the initiative, Itxaso Erroteta Sagastagoya, Councilwoman for Youth and Sports; Begoña Pedrosa Lobato, Vice Minister for Education of the Basque Government; Marie Heguy-Urain, Coordinator of Innovation Akitania and Marta, the Euroatoria technique.

During the four days of the fair, young people between the ages of 12 and 18 will show over 200 STEAM projects conducted during the course. Today, 29 Baccalaureate and 21 ESO projects will be exposed; tomorrow, 23 May, 7 Baccalaureate and 47 ESO projects; on Friday, 24 May, 6 Baccalaureate and 46 ESO; and on Saturday, 25 May, 6 Baccalaureate and 37 ESO. A total of 800 young people will participate in the fair this year. In addition to the youth of the educational centers of Euskal Herria, we will also be accompanied by the winners at national and international fairs: another 11 teams will arrive from Vila-realdi, Espinosa de los Monteros, Poio, A Coruña, Lliçà de Vall, Milan and Porto.

The Arenal will also have researchers who will evaluate the youth projects and the awards will be given on Saturday, May 25 at 13:00. The awards ceremony will bring together the winners along the fair, as well as the authorities and representatives of entities such as Teleco Renta, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Eurorregión Aquitania-Basque Navarre, the Basque Government, the City of Bilbao and Elhuyar. The awards that the winners will receive are scholarships and trips to national and international fairs. In the presentation will be the wizard Eleder and the actress María Redondo Mugica. In addition, stays in collaborating research centers will be drawn daily.

Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka has the participation of young students and research centers and universities in the Basque Country. In addition, it is important to highlight the commitment they show annually with this project: at the beginning of the course 104 researchers from universities and technological centers, among them 65 women, registered to work with the students and perform the work of evaluator of the final phase.

Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka aims to offer young people scientific experiences and to promote and disseminate scientific culture, not only at this fair held in Arenal, but also throughout the year.

From its first edition in 2013 to the present, 3,000 young people between 12 and 18 years old have presented their projects at the Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka in Bilbao. In total, nearly 1,000 research or technological projects have been submitted.

The Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka initiative, organised by Elhuyar, is supported by the Department of Education of the Basque Government, the Aquitaine Basque Eurorregion, the FECYT (Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology), the City Council of Bilbao, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, the Government of Navarra.
