Elhuyar brings together young people from different schools in Beasain to reflect on sustainability

The young people of IES Hernani, IES Txindoki and Colegio La Salle de Beasain have met at the Igartza de Beasain Palace. Research carried out throughout the year with professional researchers and reflected on sustainability have been published. The organizers, members of Elhuyar’s STEAM education and the sponsors of the initiative, representatives of the Gipuzkoa Council of Foreign Ministers, have also participated.

The young people who have met in Beasain have carried out the following investigations:

• The young people of IES Txindoki, together with the research team “Materials and technologies” of the School of Engineering of Gipuzkoa, have carried out the project “Renewable Materials: Wool”. In it, it has been analyzed if wool can be a renewable material, among other things, for use in construction.
• Young people of the La Salle Beasain Institute have carried out the project “Phytoarakando la calidad del aire” with the research team “Sustainable agriculture and biomonitoring” of the Agrobiology Institute / IDAB – CSIC. Through the plants they have been able to check the quality of the air surrounding them.
• The young people at IES Hernani have observed sucgandillas along with researchers from the Herpetology area of the Aranzadi Society of Sciences.

In addition to the young people gathered in Beasain during this course, over 500 young people from Gipuzkoa have participated in the actual research. The Ertzaintza researchers have collaborated in this process. As a result, they have deepened the content and have been closely acquainted with the world of research. At the end of the course, the projects will be presented at the Elhuyar Science Fair.

These projects are included in the brochure “Sustainability Studies to Inspire Young People” published by Elhuyar, in collaboration with the Department of Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa. The booklet, the result of collaboration between professionals in the field of education and research, presents key ideas to work on sustainability and environmental emergency in the classroom, as well as 20 inspection projects proposed by the researchers.
