Thrombosis and stroke, among others, are called stroke. Unfortunately, patients who have suffered any of these serious events are at greater risk of suffering such an event again and therefore of dying. For the first time, 52 hospitals in Spain, including the regional hospitals of Basurto, Cruces and Bidasoa, are participating in a study to detect the possibility of using certain markers of inflammation to detect the risk of a new stroke or a vascular event, such as infarction.
The research, called MITICO, has recently been presented at the IV Ischemic Stroke. Congress. The research has considered patients who have undergone a stroke 1-3 months in advance and through controls different plasma inflammatory markers (interleukins, metalloproteases, fibronecins, etc.) have been analyzed. within one year.
In addition, it has been studied whether the usual drugs used to prevent heart attacks (antiplatelet agents, antihypertensives, statins...) affect these inflammatory markers, that is, if they produce a decrease in the level of these markers.
There are no results yet, but researchers say they will release them within three months.
