1998/01/01 Sagarna, Andoni - Ingeniaria Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

Fast and economical communications in access

Jalgi's first mission is to make Internet services available. You already know that to access the Internet services you need a computer, a phone line and a modem, but having these tools is not enough to access the Internet, in addition you need a provider that offers you Internet connection. There are several companies that offer this service in exchange for a fee. It's one of them, but not like most, for the reasons I'm going to give you.

Imagine you become a “subscriber” of Jalgi. From that moment on you will have a username and password for the Jalgi server to recognize you and allow you to use different types of services. When you want to use any of these services your computer will call 055 and connect via Infovia to the Jalgi server. If you are making a call from anywhere in Spain, you will have the same connection cost: 139 pts. By hour, or less, depending on the time of the call.

As a subscriber you will also have an email address, so anyone who has email can send messages or documents containing images, sound and animations, as well as texts. Most documents will require a connection less than a minute and will arrive at the email address of the recipient at the same time, even when you want to send the same document to a dozen different points in the world. This means that you have in your hands the cheapest mail system you've had.

This is not all, because you can currently use the “chat” or keyboard dialogue systems to contact someone who is anywhere in the world by paying the above mentioned telephone rate. For example, you can install “Instant messenger” from America On Line for free on your machine to do so.

All the information you want from around the world in hand tips

One of the most interesting services on the Internet is the World Wide Web. It can be said that in it you can find all the information you want. There are thousands of websites that you can see through your computer. For example you can find the scientific journal NewScientist and the Botany section of the Museum of Natural Sciences of the Smithsonian Institution.

Jalgi himself also has his website, of course.

Each of them presents us and offers us services of their area. To understand what you are going to find if you enter each of these doors, the first thing I have to do is show what kind of relationships you can have with Jalgi.
