The salmonellosis epidemic in Britain was last fall, and since then British health officials have been very concerned. Richard Lacey, microbiologist at the University of Leeds, receives a report on the origin of the salmonellosis epidemic. Lacey has affirmed that the small genetic variability of British chickens has great importance in the transmission of bacterial diseases. The diseases caused by chickens are easily transmissible because they do not find chaste of immune chickens.

The 90% of the eggs currently produced in Britain are laid by the chickens selected for this work. All these chickens are genetically very similar, so they present trends similar to diseases.

These data insist that crops and genetic variability of animals are a precious treasure.
