Tacit crisis

1997/10/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

The TERI research center considers that soil degradation is the tacit crisis that threatens India. Erosion and nutrient reduction are factors that have endangered soil fertility in India, not forgetting that the very duration of the population is based on soil capacity.

Land degradation in India has already caused serious problems in this territory. The current situation is due to bad agricultural models and deforestation. The solution is not difficult, but you have to catch the bull before late.

India acquired independence 50 years ago. Therefore, TERI has published a report on India's environmental problems. According to TERI technicians, the most important current problem is soil degradation. The excessive intensive agriculture, the lack of total renewal of agricultural techniques or the deforestation that has been promoted to create new industrial areas and to solve population growth are, among others, the reasons outlined in the TERI report.

The problem, however, has not yet reached an irreversible point, but, according to the technicians, it is known why it causes soil degradation and, therefore, only remedy it. However, they have realized that their future is at stake.
