This dolphin has been drastically reduced to 200 individuals. Its habitat is the fast waters of the rivers, a great extinction that is due, among other factors, to the decrease of the fish populations by effect of the dams, to the negative impact of water pollution in the reproductive physiology and to the accidents with the ships. To protect this dolphin, Chinese scientists have launched experimental breeding programs in several lakes and although they lack natural habitat, they have managed to maintain stable colonies in them, far from the most harmful effects of human activity.
