Hail in Deba

2004/07/07 Elhuyar Zientzia

Yesterday they fell in Deba some eggs of chickens of size.

Normally the strong wind from bottom up during storms produces hail. This wind pushes raindrops upwards, to very cold areas. There the drops freeze and ice layers are added. Finally they fall to the ground in the form of ice balls.

Usually these balls are not big. However, occasionally large specimens are formed which can become dangerous. Yesterday, for example, they fell in Deba the size of the chicken eggs, with enough strength to distort the body of the cars present there.
