In recent decades, world food production through irrigation has increased by 50%. Currently only one seventh of the cultivated land in the world is irrigated, but it produces more than a third of the world's food. However, according to the World Bank, irrigation, despite increased production, decreases in the future. In fact, the salt that contains the water used to water affects plants, decreasing performance. This problem has been mentioned in many industrialized and developing countries.
