Disinfectants used in hospitals are ineffective

A study conducted at UPV has shown that disinfectants used in hospitals do not completely kill bacteria, moreover, bacteria can remain on walls, surfaces and surgical material of hospitals more than 30 days.

The study was conducted by Zaloa Bravo, a microbiologist from the Department of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology of the UPV/EHU. The researcher said that after the processes of hospital disinfection, not all Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria responsible for most epidemic outbreaks die. Bacteria, however, are not able to grow in the usual breeding areas, so they are not detected in disinfection assessments.
