Several studies have shown that the fact of not taking sex and gender into account can have negative consequences, such as women's health. Now, in an article published in the journal Nature, a group of international researchers claims that the consideration of these two factors allows to improve research.
The article shows examples of the improvement derived from the consideration of sex and gender in research, in areas such as marine sciences, biomedicine, robotics and artificial intelligence.
For example, one of the authors, researcher Tannenbaum of the Health Research Institute of Canada, has suggested that in the future women and men could receive completely different treatments. In fact, sex hormones are known to influence the immune system, which allows to develop antibody based treatments, such as cancer immunotherapy.
The final objective is, according to the authors, to increase transparency, promote inclusion and “reinitiate” the research system to internalize sex and gender. They have called on all branches of the scientific system to take the step together: researchers, subsidiaries, magazines, universities…
